Question 25

MediumOriginal question

If f(x)=1+xf(x) = \sqrt{1 + \sqrt{x}}, what is f′(9)f'\left(9\right)?

Options for question 25

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=121+x⋅12xf'(x) = \frac{1}{2\sqrt{1 + \sqrt{x}}} \cdot \frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}, one factor per layer.

  2. At 9: x=3\sqrt{x} = 3 and 1+3=2\sqrt{1 + 3} = 2, so 14⋅16=124\frac{1}{4} \cdot \frac{1}{6} = \frac{1}{24}.

Worth noting

14\frac{1}{4} differentiates the outer root only, without the inner 12x=16\frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}} = \frac{1}{6}.
