Question 84

EasyOriginal question

If y=(x+1)2(x+3)4y = \frac{(x + 1)^{2}}{(x + 3)^{4}} for x>−1x > -1, what is 1ydydx\frac{1}{y}\frac{dy}{dx}?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Take logs: log⁡y=2log⁡(x+1)−4log⁡(x+3)\log y = 2\log(x + 1) - 4\log(x + 3).

  2. Differentiate: 1ydydx=2x+1−4x+3\frac{1}{y}\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{2}{x + 1} - \frac{4}{x + 3}.

Worth noting

2x+1+4x+3\frac{2}{x + 1} + \frac{4}{x + 3} adds the logarithm of the denominator; a quotient subtracts it.
