Question 103

HardOriginal question

If f(x)=(x+1)(x+9)x+4f(x) = \sqrt{\frac{(x + 1)(x + 9)}{x + 4}}, what is f′(0)f'\left(0\right)?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. log⁡y=12[log⁡(x+1)+log⁡(x+9)−log⁡(x+4)]\log y = \frac{1}{2}\left[\log(x + 1) + \log(x + 9) - \log(x + 4)\right], so at 0, y′y=12(1+19−14)=3172\frac{y'}{y} = \frac{1}{2}\left(1 + \frac{1}{9} - \frac{1}{4}\right) = \frac{31}{72}.

  2. y(0)=94=32y(0) = \sqrt{\frac{9}{4}} = \frac{3}{2}, so f′(0)=32×3172=3148f'(0) = \frac{3}{2} \times \frac{31}{72} = \frac{31}{48}.

Worth noting

3124\frac{31}{24} forgets the 12\frac{1}{2} that the square root puts in front of the logarithms.
