Question 102

HardOriginal question

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Differentiate each term on its own: ddxxx=xx(1+log⁡x)\frac{d}{dx}x^{x} = x^{x}(1 + \log x); for u=(log⁡x)xu = (\log x)^{x}, log⁡u=xlog⁡(log⁡x)\log u = x\log(\log x) gives u′=(log⁡x)x(log⁡(log⁡x)+1log⁡x)u' = (\log x)^{x}\left(\log(\log x) + \frac{1}{\log x}\right).

  2. At x=ex = e: ee(1+1)+1×(0+1)=2ee+1e^{e}(1 + 1) + 1 \times (0 + 1) = 2e^{e} + 1.

Worth noting

3ee3e^{e} adds the logarithms of the two terms, as if ff were their product; a sum is differentiated term by term.
