Question 30

HardOriginal question

Take x,y>0x, y > 0. Which of these differential equations is homogeneous?

Options for question 30

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. log⁡x−log⁡y=−log⁡yx\log x - \log y = -\log\frac{y}{x}, so yx+log⁡x−log⁡y=v−log⁡v\frac{y}{x} + \log x - \log y = v - \log v, a function of v=yxv = \frac{y}{x} alone.

  2. log⁡x+log⁡y\log x + \log y, log⁡x\log x and log⁡y\log y each change by a multiple of log⁡λ\log\lambda when x,yx, y become λx,λy\lambda x, \lambda y, so the others fail.

Worth noting

log⁡x+log⁡y=log⁡xy\log x + \log y = \log xy gains 2log⁡λ2\log\lambda; only a difference of the two logs depends on yx\frac{y}{x} alone.
