Homogeneous & Linear Differential Equations · Question 32 of 120

Written as dx/dy = G(v), what is G(v)?

Question 32

EasyOriginal question

Consider the differential equation y ex/y dx=(x ex/y+y) dyy\,e^{x/y}\,dx = (x\,e^{x/y} + y)\,dy, and put x=vyx = vy.

Written as dxdy=G(v)\frac{dx}{dy} = G(v), what is G(v)G(v)?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. dxdy=x ex/y+yy ex/y=xy+yy ex/y\frac{dx}{dy} = \frac{x\,e^{x/y} + y}{y\,e^{x/y}} = \frac{x}{y} + \frac{y}{y\,e^{x/y}}.

  2. So G(v)=v+e−vG(v) = v + e^{-v}.

Worth noting

v+evv + e^{v} turns 1ev\frac{1}{e^{v}} into eve^{v}; dividing by eve^{v} gives e−ve^{-v}.
