Homogeneous & Linear Differential Equations · Question 47 of 120

Question 47

MediumOriginal question

What is the general solution of y2dxdy=x2+xyy^{2}\frac{dx}{dy} = x^{2} + xy?

Options for question 47

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. x=vyx = vy: v+ydvdy=v2+vv + y\frac{dv}{dy} = v^{2} + v, so dvv2=dyy\frac{dv}{v^{2}} = \frac{dy}{y}.

  2. −1v=log⁡∣y∣+c-\frac{1}{v} = \log\lvert y \rvert + c, and 1v=yx\frac{1}{v} = \frac{y}{x}: yx+log⁡∣y∣=C\frac{y}{x} + \log\lvert y \rvert = C.

Worth noting

yx=log⁡∣y∣+C\frac{y}{x} = \log\lvert y \rvert + C loses the minus sign of ∫dvv2=−1v\int \frac{dv}{v^{2}} = -\frac{1}{v}.
