Homogeneous & Linear Differential Equations · Question 49 of 120

Question 49

MediumOriginal question

Read the two statements and choose the correct option.

I. For dxdy=xy+tan⁡xy\frac{dx}{dy} = \frac{x}{y} + \tan\frac{x}{y}, the substitution x=vyx = vy gives cot⁡v dv=dyy\cot v\,dv = \frac{dy}{y}.

II. The general solution of that equation is sin⁡xy=Cy\sin\frac{x}{y} = Cy.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. I: v+ydvdy=v+tan⁡vv + y\frac{dv}{dy} = v + \tan v, so dvtan⁡v=cot⁡v dv=dyy\frac{dv}{\tan v} = \cot v\,dv = \frac{dy}{y}. True.

  2. II: log⁡∣sin⁡v∣=log⁡∣y∣+c\log\lvert \sin v \rvert = \log\lvert y \rvert + c, so sin⁡xy=Cy\sin\frac{x}{y} = Cy. True.

Worth noting

With x=vyx = vy the constant multiplies yy, the independent variable, not xx.
