Question 82

MediumOriginal question

What is the integrating factor of cos⁡xdydx+y=1\cos x\frac{dy}{dx} + y = 1, for 0<x<π20 < x < \frac{\pi}{2}?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Divide by cos⁡x\cos x: dydx+ysec⁡x=sec⁡x\frac{dy}{dx} + y\sec x = \sec x, so P=sec⁡xP = \sec x.

  2. ∫sec⁡x dx=log⁡(sec⁡x+tan⁡x)\int \sec x\,dx = \log(\sec x + \tan x), so the factor is sec⁡x+tan⁡x\sec x + \tan x.

Worth noting

sec⁡x\sec x is PP itself, not e∫P dxe^{\int P\,dx}.
