Question 39

MediumOriginal question

If 3[2x10]+[y1−14]=[4724]3\begin{bmatrix} 2 & x \\ 1 & 0 \end{bmatrix} + \begin{bmatrix} y & 1 \\ -1 & 4 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} 4 & 7 \\ 2 & 4 \end{bmatrix}, what is x+yx + y?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. The left side is [6+y3x+124]\begin{bmatrix} 6 + y & 3x + 1 \\ 2 & 4 \end{bmatrix}.

  2. So 6+y=46 + y = 4, giving y=−2y = -2, and 3x+1=73x + 1 = 7, giving x=2x = 2. Then x+y=0x + y = 0.

Worth noting

8 forgets to multiply the first matrix by 3: 2+y=42 + y = 4 and x+1=7x + 1 = 7.
