Question 70

HardOriginal question

F(θ)=[cos⁡θ−sin⁡θsin⁡θcos⁡θ]F(\theta) = \begin{bmatrix} \cos\theta & -\sin\theta \\ \sin\theta & \cos\theta \end{bmatrix}. What is F(π6)F(π3)F\left(\frac{\pi}{6}\right) F\left(\frac{\pi}{3}\right)?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Multiplying out, F(α)F(β)F(\alpha)F(\beta) has cos⁡αcos⁡β−sin⁡αsin⁡β=cos⁡(α+β)\cos\alpha\cos\beta - \sin\alpha\sin\beta = \cos(\alpha + \beta) on the diagonal, and similarly sin⁡(α+β)\sin(\alpha + \beta) off it: F(α)F(β)=F(α+β)F(\alpha)F(\beta) = F(\alpha + \beta).

  2. So the product is F(π2)=[0−110]F\left(\frac{\pi}{2}\right) = \begin{bmatrix} 0 & -1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{bmatrix}.

Worth noting

[01−10]\begin{bmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ -1 & 0 \end{bmatrix} is F(−π2)F\left(-\frac{\pi}{2}\right): the signs of the sines are swapped.
