Question 86

EasyOriginal question

AA and BB are skew-symmetric matrices of the same order. What is A+BA + B always?

Options for question 86

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. (A+B)′=A′+B′=−A−B=−(A+B)(A + B)' = A' + B' = -A - B = -(A + B).

  2. So A+BA + B is skew-symmetric. The same steps show that A−BA - B and kAkA are skew-symmetric too.

Worth noting

The sum is the zero matrix only when B=−AB = -A; it is skew-symmetric every time.
