Question 69

MediumOriginal question

What is the largest area of a rectangle that fits inside a circle of radius 5 cm, in cm²?

Options for question 69

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. The rectangle's diagonal is the diameter, 10. With sides xx and yy, x2+y2=100x^2 + y^2 = 100 and the area is A=x100−x2A = x\sqrt{100 - x^2}.

  2. A2=100x2−x4A^2 = 100x^2 - x^4 is largest when 200x−4x3=0200x - 4x^3 = 0, that is x2=50x^2 = 50: then y2=50y^2 = 50 too, a square, and A=50A = 50.

Worth noting

100 is the square on the diameter; the best rectangle, a square with diagonal 10, has half that area.
