Modulo Arithmetic & Congruence · Question 12 of 97

Question 12

MediumOriginal question

−38-38 is divided by 7 to give a quotient qq and a remainder rr with 0≤r<70 \le r < 7. What are qq and rr?

Options for question 12

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Take the multiple of 7 just below −38-38: 7×(−6)=−427 \times (-6) = -42.

  2. −38=7×(−6)+4-38 = 7 \times (-6) + 4, so q=−6q = -6 and r=4r = 4.

Worth noting

q=−5, r=−3q = -5,\ r = -3 does give −38-38, but its remainder breaks 0≤r<70 \le r < 7.
