Question 125

HardOriginal question

f:N→Zf : \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{Z} is given by f(n)=n2f(n) = \frac{n}{2} when nn is even and f(n)=−n−12f(n) = -\frac{n - 1}{2} when nn is odd. Which of these describes ff?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Even nn give the positive integers 1,2,3,…1, 2, 3, \ldots; odd nn give 0,−1,−2,…0, -1, -2, \ldots. The two lists never meet, and within each, different nn give different values: one-one.

  2. Any m>0m > 0 is f(2m)f(2m), and any m≤0m \le 0 is f(1−2m)f(1 - 2m): onto. So ff is a bijection.

Worth noting

Z\mathbb{Z} seems to hold twice as many numbers as N\mathbb{N}, but ff lists them as 0,1,−1,2,−2,…0, 1, -1, 2, -2, \ldots and reaches every integer.
