Question 92

MediumOriginal question

What is the shortest distance between r⃗=(i^+2j^+3k^)+λ(i^−j^+2k^)\vec{r} = (\hat{i} + 2\hat{j} + 3\hat{k}) + \lambda(\hat{i} - \hat{j} + 2\hat{k}) and r⃗=(i^+4k^)+μ(i^+j^+k^)\vec{r} = (\hat{i} + 4\hat{k}) + \mu(\hat{i} + \hat{j} + \hat{k})?

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. b1⃗×b2⃗=−3i^+j^+2k^\vec{b_1} \times \vec{b_2} = -3\hat{i} + \hat{j} + 2\hat{k} and a2⃗−a1⃗=−2j^+k^\vec{a_2} - \vec{a_1} = -2\hat{j} + \hat{k}; their dot product is 00.

  2. So the distance is 0: the lines meet, at (2,1,5)(2, 1, 5) where λ=μ=1\lambda = \mu = 1.

Worth noting

5\sqrt{5} is ∣a2⃗−a1⃗∣\lvert \vec{a_2} - \vec{a_1} \rvert, the gap between the two given points, which need not be the shortest.
