Question 7

EasyOriginal question

A line has direction cosines 32,0,−12\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}, 0, -\frac{1}{2}. What angles does it make with the xx-, yy- and zz-axes?

Options for question 7

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Each angle is the inverse cosine of its direction cosine: cos⁡−132=π6\cos^{-1}\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2} = \frac{\pi}{6} and cos⁡−10=π2\cos^{-1} 0 = \frac{\pi}{2}.

  2. cos⁡−1(−12)=2π3\cos^{-1}\left(-\frac{1}{2}\right) = \frac{2\pi}{3}, an obtuse angle, because the cosine is negative.

Worth noting

π3\frac{\pi}{3} for the zz-axis drops the minus sign of −12-\frac{1}{2}.
