Question 120

HardOriginal question

The diagonals of a parallelogram are 3i^+j^−2k^3\hat{i} + \hat{j} - 2\hat{k} and i^−3j^+4k^\hat{i} - 3\hat{j} + 4\hat{k}. What is its area?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. d1⃗×d2⃗=−2i^−14j^−10k^\vec{d_1} \times \vec{d_2} = -2\hat{i} - 14\hat{j} - 10\hat{k}, of magnitude 4+196+100=103\sqrt{4 + 196 + 100} = 10\sqrt{3}.

  2. From the diagonals, area =12∣d1⃗×d2⃗∣=53= \frac{1}{2}\lvert \vec{d_1} \times \vec{d_2} \rvert = 5\sqrt{3}.

Worth noting

10310\sqrt{3} uses the side formula on the diagonals; with diagonals the half is needed.
