Question 119

HardOriginal question

What is the area of the triangle with vertices A(1,0,2)A(1, 0, 2), B(3,1,0)B(3, 1, 0) and C(2,4,1)C(2, 4, 1)?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. AB→=2i^+j^−2k^\overrightarrow{AB} = 2\hat{i} + \hat{j} - 2\hat{k}, AC→=i^+4j^−k^\overrightarrow{AC} = \hat{i} + 4\hat{j} - \hat{k}, and AB→×AC→=7i^+7k^\overrightarrow{AB} \times \overrightarrow{AC} = 7\hat{i} + 7\hat{k}.

  2. Area =1249+49=722= \frac{1}{2}\sqrt{49 + 49} = \frac{7\sqrt{2}}{2}.

Worth noting

727\sqrt{2} is the parallelogram on ABAB and ACAC; the triangle is half of it.
