Question 118

HardOriginal question

What is the area of the triangle with vertices A(1,0,1)A(1, 0, 1), B(2,2,3)B(2, 2, 3) and C(0,3,1)C(0, 3, 1)?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. AB→=i^+2j^+2k^\overrightarrow{AB} = \hat{i} + 2\hat{j} + 2\hat{k}, AC→=−i^+3j^\overrightarrow{AC} = -\hat{i} + 3\hat{j}, and AB→×AC→=−6i^−2j^+5k^\overrightarrow{AB} \times \overrightarrow{AC} = -6\hat{i} - 2\hat{j} + 5\hat{k}.

  2. Area =1236+4+25=652= \frac{1}{2}\sqrt{36 + 4 + 25} = \frac{\sqrt{65}}{2}.

Worth noting

65\sqrt{65} is the parallelogram on AB→\overrightarrow{AB} and AC→\overrightarrow{AC}; the triangle is half of it.
