Question 22

MediumOriginal question

∣a⃗∣=3\lvert \vec{a} \rvert = 3 and −4≤λ≤2-4 \le \lambda \le 2. What is the range of ∣λa⃗∣\lvert \lambda\vec{a} \rvert?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. ∣λa⃗∣=3∣λ∣\lvert \lambda\vec{a} \rvert = 3\lvert \lambda \rvert, and on [−4,2][-4, 2], ∣λ∣\lvert \lambda \rvert takes every value from 00 (at λ=0\lambda = 0) to 44 (at λ=−4\lambda = -4).

  2. So ∣λa⃗∣\lvert \lambda\vec{a} \rvert runs over [0,12][0, 12].

Worth noting

[−12,6][-12, 6] multiplies the ends by 3 without the modulus; a magnitude is never negative.
