Question 43

MediumOriginal question

In a parallelogram ABCDABCD, what is AC→+BD→\overrightarrow{AC} + \overrightarrow{BD}?

Options for question 43

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Parallelogram law: AC→=AB→+AD→\overrightarrow{AC} = \overrightarrow{AB} + \overrightarrow{AD}; and by the triangle law, BD→=AD→−AB→\overrightarrow{BD} = \overrightarrow{AD} - \overrightarrow{AB}.

  2. Adding, AB→\overrightarrow{AB} cancels: AC→+BD→=2AD→\overrightarrow{AC} + \overrightarrow{BD} = 2\overrightarrow{AD}.

Worth noting

2AB→2\overrightarrow{AB} takes BD→=AB→−AD→\overrightarrow{BD} = \overrightarrow{AB} - \overrightarrow{AD}, which is DB→\overrightarrow{DB}, the diagonal the other way.
