Question 78

MediumOriginal question

What is the projection vector of a⃗=3i^+j^−k^\vec{a} = 3\hat{i} + \hat{j} - \hat{k} on b⃗=i^+2j^+2k^\vec{b} = \hat{i} + 2\hat{j} + 2\hat{k}?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. The projection vector of a⃗\vec{a} on b⃗\vec{b} is (a⃗⋅b⃗∣b⃗∣)b^=a⃗⋅b⃗∣b⃗∣2b⃗\left(\frac{\vec{a} \cdot \vec{b}}{\lvert \vec{b} \rvert}\right)\hat{b} = \frac{\vec{a} \cdot \vec{b}}{\lvert \vec{b} \rvert^{2}}\vec{b}.

  2. a⃗⋅b⃗=3+2−2=3\vec{a} \cdot \vec{b} = 3 + 2 - 2 = 3 and ∣b⃗∣2=9\lvert \vec{b} \rvert^{2} = 9, so it is 39b⃗=13(i^+2j^+2k^)\frac{3}{9}\vec{b} = \frac{1}{3}(\hat{i} + 2\hat{j} + 2\hat{k}).

Worth noting

i^+2j^+2k^\hat{i} + 2\hat{j} + 2\hat{k} multiplies the scalar projection by b⃗\vec{b} instead of by the unit vector b^\hat{b}.
