Tribunals get a judiciary-led selection body

Parliament passed the Tribunal Reforms Bill, 2026 in August, setting up a judiciary-led National Tribunals Commission.

The Tribunal Reforms Bill, 2026 was passed by Parliament in August 2026. It repeals the Tribunals Reforms Act, 2021, provisions of which the Supreme Court struck down in Madras Bar Association v. Union of India. The Court also directed that an independent National Tribunals Commission be set up, and the Bill does that.

The Commission is led by the judiciary. Its Chairperson must have been a Judge of the Supreme Court or a Chief Justice of a High Court, and it has four Members, two judicial and two technical. The Chief Justice of India is consulted before the Chairperson and the Judicial Members are appointed. For each vacancy the Commission recommends one candidate, plus one for a waiting list, and the Government must make the appointment within three months. The Bill covers 16 tribunals, the National Green Tribunal and the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal among them.

GOBARdhan: ₹23,731 crore for compressed biogas

On 6 August 2026 the Cabinet approved GOBARdhan, a ₹23,731 crore compressed biogas scheme run by the Petroleum Ministry.

On 6 August 2026 the Cabinet approved GOBARdhan, the National Circular Bioenergy Scheme, with an outlay of ₹23,731 crore from FY 2026-27 to FY 2035-36. It is administered by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, not agriculture, because what it produces is gas.

The aim is a nearly ten-fold rise in domestic compressed biogas (CBG) production. Two levers do most of the work: a stable administered CBG price of ₹2,110 per MMBTU, and an obligation on the CNG (Transport) and PNG (Domestic) segments to take CBG, at 3% in FY 2026-27, 4% in FY 2027-28 and 5% from FY 2028-29 onwards.

  2. BMinistry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare
  3. CMinistry of Jal Shakti
  4. DMinistry of Petroleum and Natural Gas
Your answer

  3. The outlay is ₹23,731 crore, from FY 2026-27 to FY 2035-36.

MPC holds the repo rate at 5.25 per cent

The MPC held the repo rate at 5.25% on 5 August 2026 and projected 6.7% growth and 5.0% inflation for 2026-27.

The Monetary Policy Committee met from 3 to 5 August 2026 and decided unanimously to leave the policy repo rate unchanged at 5.25 per cent, keeping the stance neutral.

The corridor moved with it and not away from it: the standing deposit facility rate stays at 5.00 per cent and the marginal standing facility rate and the Bank Rate at 5.50 per cent — a quarter of a percentage point either side of the repo rate, which is what makes the liquidity adjustment facility a corridor rather than a single number.

For 2026-27 the Bank projected real GDP growth of 6.7 per cent with risks evenly balanced, and CPI inflation of 5.0 per cent. Headline inflation had risen to 4.4 per cent in June 2026 after sixteen consecutive months below the target.

Glaw Lake becomes India's 101st Ramsar site

Glaw Lake became Arunachal Pradesh's first Ramsar site and India's 101st on 3 August 2026.

Glaw Lake in Arunachal Pradesh was designated a Ramsar Site on 3 August 2026 — the state's first, and India's 101st. The Union Environment Minister announced it.

The lake is a freshwater body in the Eastern Himalayas, fed by perennial mountain streams, and lies within the Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary. More than 150 tree species and 49 orchid species have been recorded in the site and its catchment. A wetland can sit inside another protected area and still be listed separately, because the Ramsar designation protects it for what it is rather than for where it sits.

India had 26 Ramsar sites in 2014. A running total like that changes with every designation, so the date it was true on matters as much as the number.
