Glaw Lake becomes India's 101st Ramsar site
Glaw Lake became Arunachal Pradesh's first Ramsar site and India's 101st on 3 August 2026.
Glaw Lake in Arunachal Pradesh was designated a Ramsar Site on 3 August 2026 — the state's first, and India's 101st. The Union Environment Minister announced it.
The lake is a freshwater body in the Eastern Himalayas, fed by perennial mountain streams, and lies within the Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary. More than 150 tree species and 49 orchid species have been recorded in the site and its catchment. A wetland can sit inside another protected area and still be listed separately, because the Ramsar designation protects it for what it is rather than for where it sits.
India had 26 Ramsar sites in 2014. A running total like that changes with every designation, so the date it was true on matters as much as the number.
