Match the Following in CUET English

About 5 min to learn · 80 questions

A match question gives four items in List I and four in List II, and four options that each pair them differently. You rarely need all four pairs: fix the ones you are sure of and the options do the rest. This lesson teaches that method step by step, with a worked example, and the traps built into the option lists.

The core idea

"Match the following" is one of the four item types NTA names. List I has four items, A to D, and List II has four, I to IV. Each option is a set of pairs, such as "A-II, B-IV, C-I, D-III", and exactly one option pairs every item correctly.

In this chapter the lists are vocabulary: words and their meanings, words and their opposites, idioms and phrasal verbs and what they mean. In the paper the same format is also used for other things, such as kinds of passage or figures of speech. The method is the same for all of them.

The method

Do you need to match all four pairs?

Almost never. The four options are all different, so as soon as you are sure of one or two pairs, most options fall away. That saves time for the pairs you are less sure of, and often you never have to decide them at all.

What are the steps?

  1. Read List II first. Knowing what the meanings are makes it quicker to place each word.
  2. Fix your surest pair. Choose the List I item you know best and find its partner.
  3. Strike every option without that pair. Usually two options go.
  4. Fix a second pair, and strike again. Usually one option is left.
  5. Check the last option's other pairs make sense. If one looks wrong, go back to step 2: you may have been less sure than you thought.

Example 1 · Two sure pairs are enough

Match the words in List I with their meanings in List II.

List I: WordList II: Meaning
A. timidI. very old
B. ancientII. easily broken
C. fragileIII. shy
D. lucidIV. clear

Options: A-III, B-I, C-II, D-IV; A-II, B-I, C-III, D-IV; A-III, B-IV, C-II, D-I; A-I, B-III, C-IV, D-II.

  1. Ancient means very old, so B-I. Only the first two options have B-I.

  2. Timid means shy, so A-III. Of those two, only the first has A-III.

  3. Check the rest of that option: fragile is easily broken (C-II) and lucid is clear (D-IV). Both are right.

Answer

A-III, B-I, C-II, D-IV.

Two sure pairs settled it. Lucid, the hardest word here, never had to be decided: the options decided it.

Exam shortcut

Start with the easiest word, not with A. The options do not care what order you work in, and a sure pair from the bottom of the list removes options just as well as one from the top.

Traps in the option lists

How are the wrong options built?

  • Your sure pair, with the rest wrong. One wrong option usually shares the pair most students get right. That is why step 5 matters: check the rest before you mark.
  • Two pairs swapped. An option that is right except for two items traded places. It catches a reader who fixed only one pair.
  • A second home for one item. If two meanings in List II seem to fit the same word, do not guess: fix the other pairs first and let the last meaning go where it is left.
  • Opposites for meanings. In a list of opposites, a word's synonym may be sitting in List II as bait. Read the column heading.

Quick revision

Method

  • Read List II first
  • Fix your surest pair and strike options
  • Fix a second pair; check the rest

Time

  • You rarely need all four pairs
  • Start with the easiest word, not A
  • A match question should take under a minute

Traps

  • Your sure pair with the rest wrong
  • Two pairs swapped
  • A synonym in a list of opposites

Every pair in these lists comes from the other vocabulary chapters, so the words are also practised in synonyms, antonyms, idioms and phrases and phrasal verbs.

NTA's English syllabus is one page. It names two skill areas: Reading Comprehension, with three kinds of passage of at most 300 words each (factual, narrative and literary), and Verbal Ability, with four item types (rearranging the parts, match the following, choosing the correct word, synonyms and antonyms). It says the questions are not limited to these, and prints no chapters and no split of the 50 questions. So the chapters here are ours. Reading is split by the kind of passage, because a poem is not read the way a report is. Verbal Ability is split into three areas of our own: Vocabulary, Sentence & paragraph order, and Grammar & usage. Where a chapter covers something past NTA's short list, it says so, and it is there because the papers since 2022 have asked it.
