Ordering sentences into a paragraph · Question 240 of 250

Question 240

HardOriginal question

The opening and closing sentences are given. Arrange the sentences between them.

Opening: An argument is only as strong as the evidence behind it.

P. Only a careful study, comparing many people who follow the diet with many who do not, can show whether the diet itself worked.

Q. Suppose a friend says that a new diet helped him lose ten kilograms.

R. That is one person's story, and many other things might explain it.

S. He may also have started walking more, or eating less without noticing.

Closing: So before we believe a claim, we should ask not just "Is it true for someone?" but "What is the evidence?"

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. After the opening sentence, Q gives an example: "suppose".

  2. R says "that is one person's story", S adds other things he "may also" have done, and P says what "only a careful study" can show, which leads to the lesson in the closing sentence.

  3. So the order is QRSP.

Worth noting

RQSP opens with "that is one person's story", before any story has been told.
