CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Plain sums: TREE = 20+18+5+5=4820 + 18 + 5 + 5 = 48 and SUN = 19+21+14=5419 + 21 + 14 = 54.

  2. The codes are 8 more and 6 more: TREE has 4 letters and SUN has 3, so the code adds 2 for each letter.

  3. PLANT: 16+12+1+14+20=6316 + 12 + 1 + 14 + 20 = 63; with 5 letters add 10, giving 73.

Worth noting

Adding a fixed 8 (from TREE alone) would make SUN 62, not 60, so the extra depends on the length. 63 is the plain sum.
