CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. H = 8, I = 9, D = 4, E = 5, and the code numbers are 9, 11, 7, 9: 8+18 + 1, 9+29 + 2, 4+34 + 3, 5+45 + 4.

  2. So each position is increased by the letter's place in the word (1st letter +1, 2nd +2, 3rd +3 …).

  3. LOAF: 12+1=1312 + 1 = 13, 15+2=1715 + 2 = 17, 1+3=41 + 3 = 4, 6+4=106 + 4 = 10, giving 13-17-4-10.

Worth noting

13-16-2-7 adds 1 to every letter, which fits the H of HIDE but not the I (9+1=109 + 1 = 10, not 11). 14-19-7-14 adds twice the place.
