Options for question 46

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Ways to pick 2 of 12: 12C2=66{}^{12}C_{2} = 66.

  2. Ways to pick 2 good bulbs (none defective): 9C2=36{}^{9}C_{2} = 36.

  3. P(at least one defective) =1−3666=3066=511= 1 - \frac{36}{66} = \frac{30}{66} = \frac{5}{11}.

Worth noting

716=1−(34)2\frac{7}{16} = 1 - \left(\frac{3}{4}\right)^2 treats the draws as WITH replacement. 14\frac{1}{4} is the chance for a single bulb, and 122\frac{1}{22} is the chance that both are defective.
