Question 67

HardOriginal question

A cylindrical glass beaker of diameter 7 cm contains water. How many spherical glass marbles, each of diameter 1.4 cm, must be dropped in to raise the water level by 5.6 cm? Take π=227\pi = \frac{22}{7}.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Extra water level: π×3.52×5.6=68.6π\pi \times 3.5^2 \times 5.6 = 68.6\pi cm³.

  2. One marble: 43π×0.73=43π×0.343\frac{4}{3}\pi \times 0.7^3 = \frac{4}{3}\pi \times 0.343 cm³.

  3. Number = 68.6÷(43×0.343)=68.6×3÷1.372=15068.6 \div \left(\frac{4}{3} \times 0.343\right) = 68.6 \times 3 \div 1.372 = 150.

Worth noting

600 takes 7 cm as the beaker's radius. 200 forgets the 4/34/3 in the sphere's volume, and 50 uses 4 in place of 4/34/3.
