CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. After replacement the tank is a mix of old 40% solution and new 16% solution, averaging 25%.

  2. Old : new = (25−16):(40−25)=9:15=3:5(25 - 16) : (40 - 25) = 9 : 15 = 3 : 5.

  3. Replaced fraction = 53+5=58\frac{5}{3 + 5} = \frac{5}{8}.

Worth noting

3/83/8 is the fraction that stayed, and 3/53/5 is the ratio old : new read as a fraction. Check: 3/8×40+5/8×16=15+10=253/8 \times 40 + 5/8 \times 16 = 15 + 10 = 25.
