CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. A rectangle is fixed by choosing 2 of the 5 vertical lines and 2 of the 3 horizontal lines.

  2. Vertical pairs: (52)=10\binom{5}{2} = 10. Horizontal pairs: (32)=3\binom{3}{2} = 3.

  3. Rectangles =10×3=30= 10 \times 3 = 30.

Worth noting

Counting only the small squares, or only the squares, misses the long thin rectangles. The line-pair method counts every rectangle exactly once.
