Number System · Question 51 of 71

Question 51

MediumOriginal question

A bacteria culture starts with 1 cell and doubles every hour, so after 100 hours it has 21002^{100} cells. One cell is then removed for testing. What is the unit digit of the number of cells left, 2100−12^{100} - 1?

Options for question 51

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Powers of 2 end in 2, 4, 8, 6 in a cycle of 4.

  2. 100÷4100 \div 4 leaves remainder 0, so 21002^{100} ends like 242^4, in 6.

  3. 6−1=56 - 1 = 5, so the unit digit is 5.

Worth noting

A remainder of 0 means the LAST digit of the cycle (6), not the first (2); using 2 gives 1.
