Question 20

MediumOriginal question

Can P holds 24 litres of a drink with juice and water in the ratio 5:35 : 3. Can Q holds 36 litres with juice and water in the ratio 1:21 : 2. Both cans are emptied into one tank. What is the ratio of juice to water in the tank?

Options for question 20

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Can P: juice = 24×5/8=1524 \times 5/8 = 15 L, water = 9 L.

  2. Can Q: juice = 36×1/3=1236 \times 1/3 = 12 L, water = 24 L.

  3. Tank: juice = 27 L, water = 33 L, so the ratio is 27:33=9:1127 : 33 = 9 : 11.

Worth noting

Adding the ratio terms, (5+1):(3+2)=6:5(5 + 1) : (3 + 2) = 6 : 5, is wrong because the cans hold different amounts.
