Question 52

MediumOriginal question

Simplify (0.5)3+(0.3)3(0.5)2−0.5×0.3+(0.3)2\dfrac{(0.5)^3 + (0.3)^3}{(0.5)^2 - 0.5 \times 0.3 + (0.3)^2}.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. This is a3+b3a2−ab+b2\frac{a^3 + b^3}{a^2 - ab + b^2} with a=0.5a = 0.5, b=0.3b = 0.3.

  2. Since a3+b3=(a+b)(a2−ab+b2)a^3 + b^3 = (a + b)(a^2 - ab + b^2), the fraction equals a+ba + b.

  3. 0.5+0.3=0.80.5 + 0.3 = 0.8.

Worth noting

Direct check: numerator 0.125+0.027=0.1520.125 + 0.027 = 0.152, denominator 0.25−0.15+0.09=0.190.25 - 0.15 + 0.09 = 0.19, and 0.152÷0.19=0.80.152 \div 0.19 = 0.8. Using a−ba - b gives 0.2; 0.34 is the denominator with the middle term dropped.

Concept
