Options for question 21

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. The wells that are ponds cannot be lakes, since no pond is a lake. So some wells are not lakes: this follows.

  2. Wells that are not ponds are unrestricted, so they may or may not be lakes. 'No well is a lake' and 'Some lakes are wells' are only possible.

  3. Every lake could lie inside the part of the well circle that is not a pond, so 'Some lakes are not wells' is not certain either.

  4. Only 'Some wells are not lakes' definitely follows.

Worth noting

In No + Some, the Some-not conclusion always starts from the group in the Some statement that is not in the No statement.
