Question 68

MediumOriginal question

A launch travels 45 km downstream in 3 hours on a river flowing at 3 km/h. How long will it take to return the same 45 km upstream?

Options for question 68

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Downstream speed =453=15= \frac{45}{3} = 15 km/h, so still-water speed = 15−3=1215 - 3 = 12 km/h.

  2. Upstream speed = 12−3=912 - 3 = 9 km/h.

  3. Time =459=5= \frac{45}{9} = 5 h.

Worth noting

3.75 h uses the still-water speed of 12 km/h. Going upstream the current is subtracted once more.
