Options for question 47

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. The mean speed is 903=30\frac{90}{3} = 30 km/h. Alligation on speeds gives the ratio of times: bicycle : car =(40−30):(30−15)=2:3= (40 - 30) : (30 - 15) = 2 : 3.

  2. Time by car =35×3=1.8= \frac{3}{5} \times 3 = 1.8 hours, so the distance by car is 1.8×40=721.8 \times 40 = 72 km.

Worth noting

Alligation on speeds splits the time, not the distance; 45 km splits the distance in half.
