Area of Bounded Regions · Question 36 of 115

Question 36

MediumOriginal question

Which integral gives the area enclosed by the circle x2+y2=a2x^{2} + y^{2} = a^{2}?

Options for question 36

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. In the first quadrant the circle is y=a2−x2y = \sqrt{a^{2} - x^{2}}, from x=0x = 0 to x=ax = a.

  2. The four quadrants are equal, so the area is 4 times that integral, which is πa2\pi a^{2}.

Worth noting

Without the factor 4 the integral is a single quadrant.
