Area of Bounded Regions · Question 16 of 115

Question 16

MediumOriginal question

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. ∣x∣=−x\lvert x \rvert = -x for x<0x < 0 and xx for x≥0x \ge 0, so split at 0: ∫−10(−x) dx+∫03x dx\int_{-1}^{0} (-x)\,dx + \int_0^{3} x\,dx.

  2. 12+92=5\frac{1}{2} + \frac{9}{2} = 5 square units.

Worth noting

4 is ∫−13x dx\int_{-1}^{3} x\,dx, which reads ∣x∣\lvert x \rvert as xx: the small triangle left of the yy-axis is taken away instead of added.
