Area of Bounded Regions · Question 32 of 115

Question 32

EasyOriginal question

What is the area of the region bounded by the curve x=25−y2x = \sqrt{25 - y^{2}} and the yy-axis?

Options for question 32

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. x=25−y2x = \sqrt{25 - y^{2}} is the right half of the circle x2+y2=25x^{2} + y^{2} = 25, from y=−5y = -5 to y=5y = 5.

  2. Horizontal strips: ∫−5525−y2 dy=25π2\int_{-5}^{5} \sqrt{25 - y^{2}}\,dy = \frac{25\pi}{2} square units, half the circle.

Worth noting

25π4\frac{25\pi}{4} runs the strips from y=0y = 0 only and leaves out the half below the xx-axis.
