Area of Bounded Regions · Question 52 of 115

Question 52

HardOriginal question

For a>0a > 0, what is the area of the region in the first quadrant inside the circle x2+y2=a2x^{2} + y^{2} = a^{2} and to the right of the line x=a2x = \frac{a}{2}?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. ∫a/2aa2−x2 dx=[x2a2−x2+a22sin⁡−1xa]a/2a\int_{a/2}^{a} \sqrt{a^{2} - x^{2}}\,dx = \left[\frac{x}{2}\sqrt{a^{2} - x^{2}} + \frac{a^{2}}{2}\sin^{-1}\frac{x}{a}\right]_{a/2}^{a}.

  2. At x=ax = a the bracket is πa24\frac{\pi a^{2}}{4}; at x=a2x = \frac{a}{2} it is 3a28+πa212\frac{\sqrt{3}a^{2}}{8} + \frac{\pi a^{2}}{12}.

  3. Difference: πa26−3a28\frac{\pi a^{2}}{6} - \frac{\sqrt{3}a^{2}}{8} square units.

Worth noting

πa26\frac{\pi a^{2}}{6} keeps only the sin⁡−1\sin^{-1} terms and drops x2a2−x2\frac{x}{2}\sqrt{a^{2} - x^{2}} at x=a2x = \frac{a}{2}.
