Area of Bounded Regions · Question 54 of 115

Question 54

HardOriginal question

What is the area of the region {(x,y):x2+y2≤16, y≥∣x∣}\{(x, y) : x^{2} + y^{2} \le 16,\ y \ge \lvert x \rvert\}?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. y=∣x∣y = \lvert x \rvert meets the circle where 2x2=162x^{2} = 16, at x=±22x = \pm 2\sqrt{2}; the region is symmetric about the yy-axis.

  2. Right half: ∫022(16−x2−x)dx=(4+2π)−4=2π\int_0^{2\sqrt{2}} \left(\sqrt{16 - x^{2}} - x\right)dx = (4 + 2\pi) - 4 = 2\pi.

  3. Both halves: 4π4\pi square units, a quarter of the disc.

Worth noting

2π2\pi is the half with x≥0x \ge 0; the region has a mirror image for x<0x < 0 as well.
