Continuity & Differentiability · Question 25 of 125

Question 25

HardOriginal question

How does f(x)={x3−8x−2,x≠212,x=2f(x) = \begin{cases} \frac{x^{3} - 8}{x - 2}, & x \ne 2 \\ 12, & x = 2 \end{cases} behave at x=2x = 2?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Continuity at aa needs the left limit, the right limit and f(a)f(a) to be equal.

  2. Here the left limit is 1212, the right limit 1212 and f(2)=12f(2) = 12.

Worth noting

At x=2x = 2 the formula is 00\frac{0}{0}, but the limit is x2+2x+4=12x^{2} + 2x + 4 = 12, the value given.
