Continuity & Differentiability · Question 46 of 125

Question 46

MediumOriginal question

f(x)=kcos⁡xπ−2xf(x) = \frac{k \cos x}{\pi - 2x} for x≠π2x \ne \frac{\pi}{2}, and f(π2)=5f\left(\frac{\pi}{2}\right) = 5. For which kk is ff continuous at x=π2x = \frac{\pi}{2}?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Put x=π2−hx = \frac{\pi}{2} - h: cos⁡x=sin⁡h\cos x = \sin h and π−2x=2h\pi - 2x = 2h, so kcos⁡xπ−2x=ksin⁡h2h→k2\frac{k \cos x}{\pi - 2x} = \frac{k \sin h}{2h} \to \frac{k}{2}.

  2. Continuity needs k2=5\frac{k}{2} = 5, so k=10k = 10.

Worth noting

5 takes cos⁡xπ−2x→1\frac{\cos x}{\pi - 2x} \to 1; the 2 in π−2x\pi - 2x halves the limit.
