Question 75

MediumOriginal question

Which of these functions is not continuous at x=0x = 0?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Just left of 0, [x]=−1[x] = -1, so x+[x]→−1x + [x] \to -1; at 0 and just right of it, [x]=0[x] = 0, so x+[x]→0x + [x] \to 0. A jump.

  2. x[x]→0=f(0)x[x] \to 0 = f(0) from both sides, because the factor xx tends to 0; x−∣x∣x - \lvert x \rvert and sin⁡∣x∣\sin \lvert x \rvert are built from continuous functions.

Worth noting

x[x]x[x] contains [x][x] too, but its factor xx squeezes the jump of [x][x] to nothing at 0.
