Derivatives & Second-Order Derivatives · Question 11 of 96

Question 11

MediumOriginal question

g(1)=3g(1) = 3, g′(1)=2g'(1) = 2 and f′(3)=4f'(3) = 4. What is the derivative of f(g(x))f(g(x)) at x=1x = 1?

Options for question 11

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. By the chain rule, ddxf(g(x))=f′(g(x))⋅g′(x)\frac{d}{dx}f(g(x)) = f'(g(x)) \cdot g'(x).

  2. At x=1x = 1: f′(g(1))⋅g′(1)=f′(3)⋅2=4×2=8f'(g(1)) \cdot g'(1) = f'(3) \cdot 2 = 4 \times 2 = 8.

Worth noting

4 is f′(3)f'(3) alone; the inner function's derivative g′(1)=2g'(1) = 2 still multiplies it.
