Question 25

MediumOriginal question

If f(x)=xx+3f(x) = x\sqrt{x + 3}, what is f′(1)f'(1)?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Product rule: f′(x)=x+3+x⋅12x+3f'(x) = \sqrt{x + 3} + x \cdot \frac{1}{2\sqrt{x + 3}}.

  2. At x=1x = 1: 4+12×2=2+14=94\sqrt{4} + \frac{1}{2 \times 2} = 2 + \frac{1}{4} = \frac{9}{4}.

Worth noting

14\frac{1}{4} keeps only xx times the derivative of the root and drops the term x+3\sqrt{x + 3}.
