Question 53

MediumOriginal question

A curve is given by x=etx = e^{t}, y=e−ty = e^{- t}. What is its slope dydx\frac{dy}{dx} at t=log⁡2t = \log 2?

Options for question 53

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. dxdt=et\frac{dx}{dt} = e^{t} and dydt=−e−t\frac{dy}{dt} = - e^{- t}.

  2. dydx=dy/dtdx/dt=−e−2t\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{dy/dt}{dx/dt} = - e^{- 2 t}.

  3. At t=log⁡2t = \log 2 the slope is −14- \frac{1}{4}.

Worth noting

Dividing the other way round gives dxdy\frac{dx}{dy}.
